- Answer as if a customer asked you in a pub, not in a pitch. The honest version is usually the differentiated one.
- Name who you lose to. A USP that does not survive contact with your actual competitor is just a slogan.
- Give it something you can prove. "Same day" or "one point of contact" beats "quality service" because a customer can check it.
- If it comes back sounding like anyone in your industry could say it, tell it that. The second pass is where it gets sharp.
What is a USP?
USP stands for unique selling proposition: the specific reason a customer should choose you over the alternatives. A good one is a promise, and a customer can check it. “Quality service” is not a USP. “We beat any competitor’s price by 10%” is.
Most businesses struggle to say theirs because it feels obvious to them. This tool helps you find it by asking about what you do, who you help and what you do differently, then turns your answers into a USP and a one-line pitch you can say out loud.

What it asks you
- What you currently tell people you do. In your own words, however rough.
- Who you help, and what they come to you for.
- What you are best at. The work you get thanked for.
- What you do differently. Your method, or the belief behind your work.
- What matters to your customer. The worry you take away.
Then it drafts a few one-liners, you pick the one that sounds like you, and it gives you three versions to use.
From a few answers to a USP: a real example
This is a real run of the tool for a four-person electrician in Brisbane. On the left, the answers. On the right, what came back.
What you do: We're a residential electrical business in Brisbane, four electricians. Mostly homeowners: rewires, switchboards, fault-finding and safety switches. Best at: Fault-finding. The house where the power keeps tripping and two other electricians couldn't find why. Customers thank us for actually explaining what was wrong, in plain English. Method: We isolate one circuit at a time and test before we touch anything. We always show the customer the fault before we fix it. Why it matters: They've been burned by guesswork and charged for parts that didn't fix anything. We quote a fixed price on the phone from a photo, the electrician who quoted is the one who arrives, and if we're late we take fifty dollars off.
MAIN PICKUP LINE We find the electrical faults other sparkies gave up on. We show you the problem before we fix it, for the price we quoted on the phone. THE PROBLEM IT SOLVES Homeowners who have already paid someone else to guess. They have been charged for parts that did not fix anything, and left waiting for tradies who never showed. They cannot tell who to trust. WEBSITE VERSION We specialise in residential fault-finding across Brisbane, including the jobs other electricians could not solve. We test every circuit before we touch anything, show you the fault, and hold the price we quoted. BOLD VERSION No guessing, no parts roulette. We find the fault, show you the fault, and stick to the price. Late and we take fifty off.
The full result also includes a summary of the niche and method, and advice on how to say it out loud.

Each of these was copied from the company’s own website in September 2026, with a link to the source. Notice how specific they are: a margin, a time period, a named remedy.

How to write a USP
- List what you do differently. Your method, your guarantee, your speed, your niche.
- Find what customers thank you for, and what they fear. The fears show what a promise from you could remove.
- Test it against a competitor. Could the business down the road say the same thing? If yes, go more specific.
- Make it checkable. Add a number, a time or a remedy so a customer can hold you to it.
- Say it out loud. If you wince, rewrite it.

Questions, answered
What is a USP?
A specific promise about why someone should pick you, one they can check. "Quality service" is not a USP. "We beat any competitor's price by 10%" is.
What does USP stand for?
Unique selling proposition. Some people say unique selling point. It is the same idea: the specific reason a customer should choose you over the alternatives.
What do I get from the USP generator?
A USP, a one-line pitch you can say out loud, three versions of it (formal, conversational and bold), a summary of your niche, strengths and method, and simple advice on how to say it.
How long does it take?
About ten minutes and a handful of short questions. Most people finish in one sitting.
What does it ask me?
What you currently tell people you do, who you help, what you are best at, what you do differently and why it matters to your customer. Then it drafts a few one-liners and you pick the one that sounds like you.
Can I start from a USP I already have?
Yes. Paste it in and the tool uses it as the starting point. It says what already works and asks only about what your draft does not cover.
Is a USP the same as a slogan?
No. A slogan is a short, memorable line. It may or may not contain a USP. A USP is the promise itself, and it has to be true and specific enough that a customer could test it.
Can a small or service business have a USP?
Yes, and service businesses often have the easiest ones to write: a guarantee, a response time, a fixed price, a specific niche or a method. Jim's Group and Roto-Rooter above both back everyday trade work with a stated promise.
